“I’m telling you, it’s gone!”

There was shouting coming from ahead of Alexa and Kage as they crossed the hallway and rushed toward the opposite open door of Eddie Kendrick’s studio room.

“Sir, I won’t tell you again to calm down and sit down,” they heard one of the Service agents saying, as they slowed to a jog and for the second time that day entered Eddie Kendrick’s rooms.

They found it still in disarray, but now with a considerably angrier Mr. Angry Hipster standing in the middle of the lowered room, with a suited Secret Service agent pointing a finger at him and almost prodding him in the chest. It was clear that the tension in the room was high, and that at any moment Kendricks was about to get himself arrested.

Which, if he is the killer, would make my life a lot easier, Alexa thought as she pushed herself forward.

“What is gone exactly?” she demanded, as Kendricks looked up at her, a furious glare on his face. The sofa was still upturned to one side, now with its bottom stuffing entirely ripped out. Either Kendricks had been even angrier than usual after their last chat, or he hadn’t bothered to clean up.

“Sir, I detained the witness in here for questioning, as right now there didn’t seem to be any issue,” the Secret Service agent, one of the very few handful that remained, explained, when Kendricks exploded.

“You see! You’re admitting it! Detention! I am being detained against my will! What for? First, you think I’m a bomber, then you think I’m what? A murderer!? Under what power or act am I being held!?”

“Sir-” the Secret Service agent bristled.

We haven’t got time for this, Alexa thought as she moved to the edge of the railing.

“Mr. Kendricks. What are you missing? It’s important. Or it might be. Tell us now and maybe this goes away,” she snapped.

“My yacht key!” Kendricks barked, turning to point down at the upturned leather sofa. “Look at this! Why would you do this? You could have just searched it – I gave you permission to search my rooms.”

“Technically, sir, we only need Mr. Price’s permission, not yours,” Kage reminded him acidly, as Kendricks huffed and puffed.

Not helping, Alexa thought as she struggled to make sense of what was going on.

“You are being detained because you admitted that you were one of the last people to see Eva Montgomery (if that was even her real name) alive. That makes you a suspect. A suspect in a murder case, which means we have the right to hold you for up to twenty-four hours without charge. And that is even before we start talking about the recent state of emergency…” Alexa pointed out.

Which doesn’t apply anymore, Alexa winced. That was a temporary legal order, which is over now. We have to allow them to leave if they want… although no one could go anywhere in this storm, could they?

“Preposterous! You’ve had it in for me from the beginning! You’ve completely ignored everything I’ve told you,” Kendricks spat at them.
